918 F STREET, Washington, DC
The 918 F Street building, also known as the National Union Building, was constructed in 1890. The National Union Building is bounded by F Street to the north, a two-story building that is undergoing renovation to the east, and alleys to the south and west. An adjacent building to the west has been recently demolished leaving only the front facade which is being supported by steel framework. The National Union Building is a seven-story multi-wythe brick bearing wall and steel floor beam building with the basement level below grade at the front (north elevation) and above grade at the rear (south elevation). The building foundation is also brick masonry with a sub-basement under a portion of the basement. The seventh floor is the attic of the pitched roof with an open terrace area at the rear for a cooling tower and emergency generator. All elevations are brick facade except the north elevation and a small part of the west elevation which is rock face and cut Seneca sandstone (brownstone). The building was listed on the National Historic Register on September 21, 1990.
